Mary Darragh MacLean
Mary Darragh MacLean

Mary is one of the founders of Sign Language Resources, Inc., its President and current manager, CEU coordinator, and New Interpreter Liaison. She became involved with the Orange County Deaf community first as a teacher for deaf children at Orange Ulster BOCES from 1978 to 1982, and then after as a Sign Language interpreter in private practice. In 1989, Mary and Kathleen Pilus established SLR, knowing that the Hudson Valley region needed coordination of American Sign Language interpreting services, and who better than practitioners who understand the needs of the Deaf as well as independent interpreters?

Since Kathleen's retirement, Mary spends half of her time in the office managing the business, and the other half working with consumers and Sign Language interpreters, as well as teaching and mentoring newcomers to the field. If you are new to the field of Sign Language interpreting, Mary is the person to talk to! She also teaches in the federally-funded Interpreter Education program housed at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, Queens.

She and her husband, John, have 4 grown daughters, and live in Westchester County, New York. Mary holds CSC and CI certifications from RID/NAD.

Karen Johnson
Karen Johnson

Karen joined SLR in May 2010, and is our National Sign Language Interpreting Services Coordinator, but is not new to the field of interpreting or service coordination! Based in Colorado, and coordinating work nationally as well as internationally, Karen had 20 years' experience coordinating sign language interpreting services with Sign Language Associates (SLA).

Many of you knew and respected SLA, which was based in the Maryland/Washington DC area, and who was then purchased by another entity. SLR had enjoyed a long term relationship with Karen, so we were thrilled to have her join our staff. Karen has turned out to be a tremendous asset to our growing company.

Prior to entering this field, Karen was owner of two specialty toy stores in Denver and also worked in other retail stores, on both coasts, for several years. In August 1993, she was one of the first two graduates from the Catonsville Community College (now CCBC) ITP program to earn her AAS degree in Interpreting. She lived with her family in Maryland for 20 years, before deciding to move back to her childhood home in Denver, where she now resides.

Karen has a grown daughter, a grown son, four teenage grandchildren, and has several more children on both the East and West Coast who call her "Grandma".

Karen is excited to be a part of the SLR staff. Wherever you have an interpreting need, anywhere in the USA or around the Globe, she will be happy to assist you in making the arrangements!
