REFLECT

As you look back on 2019, and prep for the rest of this school year, it may be time to reflect on sign choices. Do you wish you had a strong database for reviewing signs (and in context!) for the various subjects you interpret? RIT with NTID has created the site ASLCORE which highlights vocabulary in Architecture, Art, Biology, Computer Science, Literature and Physics (to name a few!).

The suggested signs you see in each ASLCORE branch are developed according to ASL linguistic principles by fluent Deaf ASL signers. Their goal is to provide descriptive signs which may serve to complement other initialized or English-influenced sign choices. These signs are presented for your consideration, modification, and adoption if they function well in your work as students, professionals, teachers, or interpreters!

Thank you to Laura Mondesando for this resource!

RECONNECT

As you kick off 2020, remember that  regardless of whether you work with a team or spend your days solo--you are part of a community. You have the opportunity to connect with interpreters through various PD opportunities.

  • Do you know about SLR's ShareShop? Have you attended? These are held every other month (in person!) and streaming on Zoom. Share in your fellow interpreters' other credentials and experiences.  ShareShops may include: cultural presentations, special skills, hobbies, former careers and helpful life hacks that can apply to your interpreting and to life in general!             Interested in presenting a ShareShop?  Contact Charles@slrconnect.com

(Next SLR ShareShop is January 29th!)

  • National Association of Interpreters in Education holds online webinars, sends newsletters and provides additional resources on their website. As K-12 interpreters you may want to consider joining this growing association and learn from fellow interpreters nationwide!
